Smart Bidding's blind spot
Google Ads, Meta Ads, TikTok Ads: all these networks use automated bidding algorithms that optimize in real time on your conversion data. It's powerful. But that power rests on a fragile assumption: your conversion data is accurate.
When it isn't, the algorithms keep optimizing. Except they're optimizing on noise.
Three common scenarios
1. Zero-euro conversions
Your checkout sends a purchase event but the value field is empty or zero. The algorithm sees conversions but no revenue. It will maximize conversion volume with no regard for value, and your CPA explodes.
2. A pixel that stops firing
The pixel is dead but the algorithm doesn't know it. It simply sees its conversion rate drop to zero. Its response: lower bids or shift budget to other, less qualified audiences.
3. Double counting
A dataLayer bug fires two purchase events per transaction. The algorithm thinks the conversion rate has doubled and raises bids aggressively. Your CPC climbs, your budget burns faster, your real ROAS collapses.
The snowball effect
The bigger danger is the gradual drift of bidding models, more than any one-off error. The longer corrupted data feeds the algorithm, the longer it takes to get it back on track.
After fixing a conversion data bug, allow:
- 24-48h for Google Ads to readjust its bids
- 48-72h for Meta Ads to stabilize its model
- Up to 7 days to get back to pre-incident performance
Prevention over cure
Proactive monitoring of conversion data is the only way to stop the drift early. Continuously check that:
- Conversion events are firing correctly
- The amounts reported match actual transactions
- Conversion volume stays within normal baselines
That's exactly what a dedicated e-commerce monitoring tool does: it turns these technical anomalies into financial impact so you can act before your bids drift.
